Leon Polk Smith
Line, Color, and the Concept of Space
Los Angeles
20 November – 1 February
Lisson Los Angeles and Marc Selwyn Fine Art are excited to present a joint exhibition of works by Leon Polk Smith (1906 - 1996), marking the artist’s first solo exhibition in Los Angeles in over a decade. Spanning both gallery spaces, the presentation brings together more than twenty paintings alongside with a selection of his related works on paper. The two shows provide Ia special opportunity to examine the development and breadth of Smith’s mature practice from the mid-1950s through 1980. Featuring several works never before exhibited, the exhibitions trace the evolution of Smith’s distinctive geometric abstraction across more than two decades, highlighting his pioneering investigations of positive and negative space, line, colour and form. Together, these works underscore Smith’s enduring contribution to postwar American abstraction and reaffirm his position as one of the movement’s most original and sustained innovators.
